On Thursday 11 April Bishop Ross Bay visited St. Peter’s and consecrated the new altar during a special communion service. Noting it was ‘Bishop Selwyn Memorial Day’ he spoke of Bishop Selwyn, the first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand, who died on 11 April, 1878. A hundred and fifty five years later Anglicans and many other New Zealanders remain grateful to that extraordinary man for his example to Maori and Pakeha and his contribution to our society in the early days of European settlement.

The altar, which is comparably small and mobile, will allow communion to be served in the midst of the congregation. Following the service parishioners enjoyed meeting The Bishop, and others who had travelled with him, over a cup of tea, cakes and sandwiches.
